How to evaluate ANPR at your own vehicle gate

Prepared by Elpidaa · Published

An ANPR pilot should test the vehicles, number plates and operating conditions at the gate where it will be used. Elpidaa scopes camera integration and vehicle-access analytics around that workflow. Keep plate recognition, vehicle matching and permission to open a barrier as separate decisions.

A practical checklist for your team

How to evaluate ANPR at your own vehicle gate: evaluation record
Test conditionWhat to recordWhy it matters
Representative vehicle passesAn agreed reference plate, direction, vehicle type and observed conditions for each pass.A repeated easy example is not representative of the full gate workload.
Recognition outcomeCorrect read, incorrect read or unreadable result; keep the total number of reference passes.Excluding unreadable plates can make a result look stronger than the actual gate experience.
Day, night and difficult viewsRecord lighting, glare, rain when available, occlusion and the plate formats actually encountered.Report conditions separately so the team can identify camera or lighting changes.
Access decisionApproved, denied or sent for review; record who made the decision and how an exception was handled.A recognised plate is evidence for a workflow, not permission by itself.
Barrier and outage handoffTest authorised integration, manual control, duplicate events and recovery from power or network loss.Recognition quality alone does not prove that the complete access process works.

Define the unit you are counting

Agree what counts as one vehicle pass, how repeat passes are treated and who records the reference plate. Keep non-readable or excluded cases visible in the test record. Agree the treatment of motorcycles, temporary plates and other relevant formats before collecting results.

Use the full denominator

Report correct reads divided by all agreed reference passes, with incorrect and unreadable results alongside the total. If you also report accuracy among readable results, label that narrower measure explicitly. Group results by relevant conditions rather than publishing one unexplained percentage.

Separate recognition from access control

Define the allowlist owner, update process, manual review and authorised barrier integration. Test a valid plate that is not authorised and an authorised plate that cannot be read. Agree how staff handle each case without relying on the model to make the final policy decision.

Agree acceptance before collecting results

Specify the site, lane, camera view, operating conditions, measures, observation period and approver in the pilot plan. Choose the thresholds for that gate; a website demonstration or another site’s result does not establish acceptance for this one.

Questions before you begin

Can a clear daytime plate read prove ANPR will work at night?

No. Evaluate the actual night lighting, headlights, glare and vehicle approach at the gate. Record night results separately and assess changes to camera position or illumination where needed.

How should unreadable plates be reported?

Keep unreadable cases in the agreed reference-pass total and report them separately from incorrect reads. State any exclusions and the reason for them.

Does an ANPR result automatically open the barrier?

Only if an authorised integration and access policy have been scoped and tested. Define allowlists, exception handling, manual controls and how the system behaves when a read or connection is unavailable.

What should we send Elpidaa before a gate assessment?

Send the site city, lane layout, approximate traffic pattern, camera and recorder models, and the intended access workflow. Arrange any authorised technical access with the team separately.
